Tips on Preventing Oral Health Problems

You’ve probably heard some variation on the phrase, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This old adage is particularly true when it comes to your oral health. What might begin as a simple, minor issue that could be taken care of in a single, quick appointment can develop into a major problem requiring expensive restorative dentistry treatments spread over multiple appointments. Too often, patients allow small inconveniences to snowball into dental emergencies that disrupt their lives.

Of course, we’re all human, and that’s why we offer the finest in restorative treatments such as dental crowns and bridges of the most surpassing standard. However, we urge our patients to do whatever they can to prevent major dental issues from arising by being proactive in terms of their oral health. During their appointments at the practice of Dr. Danny O’Keefe in Jackson, preventative dentistry tips are provided to help them take control of the health, beauty, and function of their mouths.

Here are just a few of the preventative dentistry tips we provide to our valued patients. For further tips, we invite you to visit the practice of Dr. Danny O’Keefe today.

Tips on How to Prevent Oral Health Problems

There are several simple ways in which you can help to prevent oral health problems from developing:

  • Brush and floss properly after each meal, at least twice daily: The key word here is “properly.” Many people brush and floss twice a day, but fail to do so properly. In order to brush effectively, you should be using a soft-bristled toothbrush with gentle force and up-and-down strokes. Brush all of the surfaces of your teeth, not just the fronts.
  • Limit your consumption of acidic foods: Foods such as citrus fruits, wine, soda, salad dressings, tomatoes, vinegar, berries, and jams and jellies are high in acidic content. These acids can eat away at your tooth enamel, making your teeth susceptible to decay. Be certain to brush your teeth after consuming such foods.
  • Seek treatment if you grind your teeth: Tooth grinding is more than simply an annoying habit - it can be extremely harmful to your teeth, wearing down your enamel and even causing them to shift out of their optimal positions. Our practice offers therapies to help you protect your teeth from the dangers of chronic tooth grinding.
  • Visit our practice at least twice a year: The American Dental Association recommends that you visit the dentist at least twice a year for oral exams and professional cleanings, and so do we. This is the surest way to prevent gum disease and tooth decay, as it allows us to identify and treat potential problems in their earliest possible stages. It also gives us the opportunity to educate you on how to maintain the health of your mouth between appointments.
