The world of dentistry is evolving every day, as dentists gain the tools and technology to provide their patients with more efficient and effective service. CEREC is a technology that is helping patients get through once-complicated dental work quickly and with minimal effort - and it’s one of many state-of-the-art technologies offered at the Jackson cosmetic and restorative dentistry practice of Dr. Danny O’Keefe Family Dental Care.
CEREC is an acronym that stands for CEramic REConstruction. The term describes a system in which your dentist can utilize 3D photography as well as computer-aided drafting and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to assist in cosmetic dentistry practices.
In traditional dentistry practices, a dentist would need to take a physical mold of your teeth and use that to cast and shape crowns, bridges, dental implants, or porcelain veneers. With this new technique, Dr. O’Keefe is able to photograph your dental structure and create a 3D digital model from the resulting images. Using that information, a custom porcelain tooth restoration can be created through CAD technology and milled on site from the resulting CAD model.
In addition to restorative dentistry work to fix cracked, broken, or missing teeth, CEREC technology can also be used as a means for “instant orthodontics,” using porcelain veneers to mask misaligned teeth and provide a more perfect smile practically overnight.
Why choose a cosmetic dentist who offers CEREC technology over a dentist who doesn’t? CEREC technology offers several distinct advantages, including:
