What are my bone grafting options?

Your dentist or oral surgeon will recommend the bone grafting material they feel is best for you. It will probably be one of the following commonly used options:

  • Autograft: With this option, the grafting material actually comes from the patient. Autograft is very well accepted by your body, and rich in bone growth proteins. Autograft is generally believed to produce the fastest rate of bone growth. Its one downside is that it requires a second surgical site in your mouth or elsewhere in your body, which can lead to additional discomfort and higher risk of infection.

  • Allograft : Allograft means "from another human" . This is typically highly processed bone powder originating from human cadavers. Allograft contains bone growth proteins that are proven to generate new bone when used as a grafting material. The age and health of the donor, however, can affect rate of bone regeneration for you. Processing and quality control reduces risk of disease transmission or rejection by your immune system.

  • Xenograft: Xenograft products are animal derived (usually from cows) and include processed animal bone or animal bone growth proteins. In theory, these products also contain bone growth proteins, but less is known about these materials than is known about autograft and allograft. Like allograft, these products have been highly processed to reduce the risk of disease transmission or rejection by your immune system.

  • PerioGlas® Synthetic Bone Graft Material: This product is a "bioactive" ceramic that has been proven to generate new bone rapidly. In fact, no material has been shown to generate bone more rapidly, and in hundreds of thousands of patients who have received PerioGlas®, there has never been an adverse reaction reported. Its synthetic nature means it carries no risk of disease transmission or immune system rejection. PerioGlas® creates an environment that accelerates a body's own regenerative capacity.
